Polestar 2 With Less Than 500 Miles, Leaves On A Tow Truck

Less than 500 miles (804.67 km) into owning Polestar's first attempt at an all electric vehicle resulted in a work day disrupted and my Polestar taken away on a tow truck. A week prior, I had picked up the new 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor with Pilot Package. I was thoroughly enjoying my ownership. The blistering 0-60 times were addicting, and the stylish fastback caught attention from all types of people. However, this honeymoon period came to an abrupt halt in the form of a Propulsion Error.

To make Mondays even worse, about a week into ownership, I stopped for morning coffee. When I came back out to the car, I had a notification. The above warning stated propulsion system service required. I then noticed that 50% of power is greyed out. The car still seemed driveable, just in limp mode, as I still needed to get to work.

At the time I did not think it had to do with battery charge as I left home with about 90% charge. Temperatures should not have played a factor either, as it was in the low 40°s.

When I got to work, I did an infotainment reboot. Unfortunately there was no change, but the message went away and there was no message in car status. However, 50% of power is still limited. Thus still being in limp mode.

I left it to charge at work while I called the local polestar space and talked with the service manager. Since I am located in the United States, we do not have dedicated Polestar service centers, so I was routed to the local Volvo dealership that is certified to work with Polestar vehicles. Polestar has a promise that they will come and pick up your car and take it to the closest service space if you are less than 150 miles (241.4 km) away.

When I spoke with the service manager, he didn't want to send any of their people to pick it up and drop off a loaner. Is reasoning was that it could be not safe to drive the 100 or so miles to the service center. I completely understood. That being said, I drive 50 miles (80.47 km) home from work, so I asked if it was safe for me to drive. He recommended I get polestar roadside to tow it to the space.

I used Polestar Road side assistance by pressing the SOS button. I explained the situation, and they set up a tow company to pick up the vehicle. Not only that, but I received a text with a website that allowed me to track the tow track with an estimated arrival time of an hour.

I called the service manager back, and he seemed resistant to provide me with a loaner. Let alone, drive it the 100 some miles to me. I persisted the issue by stating Polestar's service agreement, and he said he would call me back. After about an hour, he called me back and said he had someone bringing me a loaner. I can only assume he had to arrange everything on their end.

In a very convenient occurrence, they arrived with the loaner right around the time I was to leave work. Even more fortunately, the loaner they provided had the two packages I did not have, plus and performance pack. It was nice to experience the difference in suspension that the Öhlins Dual Flow Valve dampers provide. As well as the premium Harman Kardon sound system. Both of which I enjoyed, however I prefer the softer ride of the stock suspension.

The following morning, the service manager calls me and says that the car is ready. When I asked them what the root cause was, they stated a software reload was needed. The service invoice reflects this. They even drove my car the 100 miles (160.93 km) to my work place and took the loaner back.

Overall, I am pretty impressed with the level of service. It is an unfortunate situation, but they handled it very well. As of this article, I am just cresting 5,000 miles (8,046.72 km) and have not had this issue again. I am thoroughly enjoying the car and save a lot of money in gas, all while having a car that is fantastic to be in and even more fun to drive.
