Polestar, why piano black plastic?

Although the Polestar 2 has a minimal and clean interior, some owners dislike the high gloss piano black center console.

Polestar, why piano black plastic?

The interior of the Polestar 2 was thoughtfully created using cutting-edge materials. It maintains a clean appearance while remaining functional.
From the 3D Etched deco dash to the vegan-friendly WeaveTech material, it provides a delightful driving experience.

Unfortunately, piano black plastic was used for the center console of the car. While in practice piano black looks good, generally long term ownership is a bit different. It first becomes covered in dust and other particles, which just takes a day or two. After that, it becomes severely scraped and loses its aesthetic appeal. Even more so, the amount of reflected light off of it can be distracting while driving.

The center console is not the only area that piano black trim was used. The steering wheel buttons also feature this unfortunate automotive trend. These buttons will almost always have fingerprints on them, regardless of how often you clean them. The volvo XC40 Recharge, which the Polestar 2 shares many parts with, has a matte finish and in my opinion looks a bit better.

As with all cars, owners love to take matters into their own hands. A solution some owners are coming up with is to wrap the center console. Although to effectively wrap the console you must remove it from its housing, which can take some effort, the pay-off may be worth it for the clean look it provides.

A YouTube user provides a pretty decent run down on how to remove it. I recommend using plastic pry tools to slowly work around the center console to make sure you do not break any clips. I'm really considering doing this in the future because it just looks so much better than the piano black plastic that is standard.
